Hello! we are heartwood - Moira Aitken and Claudia Paterson, two best friends who work and live with our families in the lovely leafy valley of Finzean in the woody heartlands of Royal Deeside, in Aberdeenshire, Scotland.
Back in 1988 we left school and didn't have to travel far before being lucky enough to be taken on as apprentices at the Ironside Furniture Group, and thirty years later we are still there and fully qualified furniture makers and restorers but always learning!
We both specialise in slightly different areas, Moira in restoration, carving, and replacing worn and damaged cane and rush panels. Claudia likes manufacturing and construction and making bespoke pieces. Within the furniture group we work alongside clients making the antiques of the future.
In 2018 we were looking for a really special present for a friend and couldn't find any mirrors of the quality we knew we could produce ourselves. Having a genuine love of the materials we work with and as we put our heart and soul into everything we do, it seemed a simple step to design and make our first oak mirror. This led on to developing pieces in ash, elm, oak and sycamore sourced exclusively from Scottish forests. Our lamps are designed to let the wood grain shine and paired with shades that suit a contemporary interior. This small and exclusive range has proved popular with everyone who can appreciate the attention to detail and high quality craftsmanship. Have a browse through the gallery, if you have a particular request we are always happy to discuss a commission, but bare in mind each new piece is individually made and takes time, skill and care to produce.
